Sunset at Pen-Lan
First day after flight and drive from airport to the cousins. Absolutely surprised there was enough water despite outgoing tide to get a quick swim! After the flight, 2 hours traffic jams leaving Paris and 6 hours to Armor-Pleubian, it was welcome surprise!
Oyster boat at La Roche Jaune

Large sailboat "freelance.com" entering at low tide
This skipper had some nerve coming in at low tide, at full sail, and ripping along in a massive racing boat.
Thrift in the morning, detail
A little thrift along the patio
Pin parasol dans le cours du voisin
I am obsessed by this tree and have tried to photograph it for two years now. This one is a cheat and the blue sky got wrecked with banding by either Lightroom or the sharpen AI. Getting the color, the light and the sharpness has been very, very difficult and I hope to have another chance next year.
My first moon
First time I take a picture of the moon intentionally with a camera and it isn’t a mess.

Atelier d'une artiste
Chapelle de Port Blanc
Failed attempt
I tried to get the far and the near in focus and properly exposed. Despite mammoth amounts of masking and editing it’s a flop and the color is flat.

A semi-successful attempt to focus and get proper eposure through a window.
Corer, detail
Through the branches
This dense thicket of branches behind the Gilberts main yard presented a challenge to get the exposure and focus just right to peer into the tangled arms of the trees (fruit trees I believe)
Glass shadows
I liked the colorful shadows cast through the glassware, lovely late summer late afternoon light.
Walking home to Port Blanc
This path did not exist until a few years ago (near Kermarquer). You used to take your life into your hands walking a blind curve.
Kermarquer
Not a great photo but for me, first time I thought to photo the entrance to the place now that there is a path where you can stand and not get run over….I should have brushed out the overhead wire in the foreground….Ok, I just did :-)
Calvaire at dusk
Lit from behind, I thought it was ok as a photograph but no one else liked it. I removed a wire that was annoying me.

Crepes at Bugueles
We went to the Monday night market with Sonia and Gino to get their first proper crepe
Crepe making station, detail
Trio playing traditional Celtic music
Mainly breton tunes. I tried to get the crop more balanced but that fiddler in the foreground is so much taller than the others!
Child and musician
The violinist was very charming, patient and attentive to the small children cavorting around the trio.
Le "twist" breton
The older couple had shown everyone proper breton dances but the kids could only do twists do everyone started to do the twist.
Duo
The guitarist was also a trumpet player, here accompanying the fiddler singing some song….the trumpeter was a bit annoyed, his partner hadn’t quite learned the lyrics…
Sunset, water and clouds
A fierce light pushing through the clouds and igniting the water at sunset.
Sonia and Dominique
I think this shot came out quite nice, the ladies look great, the evening light is good and everyone is in focus. I was doing a lot of manual shots (focus, speed and aperture) but I still need to master the metering. Oh, and I remember to bring my tripod
Paul, Dominique, Sonia and Gino
Less successful, I was having trouble with the wind and my camera settings. I look displeased.
Church converted to school, now a theatre
Roofs of Treguier
Almost medieval…..
Light and shadow in Cathedral, Treguier
Stained glass window, Cathedral, Treguier
A very difficult shot to balance the light, I gave up and let the light from the windows rule the shot and masked and raised the stone interior in software.
Ghosting light
A mistake but quite pleasing to my eye
Stained glass, St Yves I think
The proper shot of the ghosted light. This is near the shrine to St Yves, the kneeling figure I think is St Yves.
Sonia and Dominique in the Cathedral
Not bad, they were unruly models, not listening to my instructions. And I screwed up the focus on this one, had to resort to Sharpen AI to recover….
Interior of Cathedral
Not a fascinating shot I agree.
Upper windows, Cathedral
Another kind of throw away shot….more for documentary purposes
Light jewels on St Yves
A shot I have tried many times, this time I think the combination of the camera, lens, good light conditions, proper settings and a bit of software really make the light jewels pop.
Main tower of Cathedral
An easy banal architectural shot of the main tower
Penitent head on exterior of Cathedral
Not a gargoyle, not a statue, this head held by its own miniature hands is one of many on the exterior of the church.
View of the cathedral from the Cloisters
Not totally bad, despite shooting into the sun and lacking a wide angle lens….
Dominique in the Cloisters
A love of light, or to be soppy, a light of love. Dutch master inspired?
Throughs the butresses, Cloisters, Treguier
Not a top ten shot, maybe more zoom/crop? Unbalanced.
Dominique in the Cloisters
Purposeful shot, she obeyed instructions!
Roman style tower, with gargoyles
Another into the sun shot but nicely shows the most ancient tower of the Cathedrale of St Tugduall, viewed from the Cloisters. And the gargoyles on the left are pretty clear as well.
Stair detail
I like my small architectural details, I am sorry.
Almost smiling Dominique outside the Cloisters
She almost obeyed and did a head turn. This was the best angle. I intentionally did not crop to center her completely. I wanted some of the stone wall to move off into the distance on the right.
Tiny statue, recessed nook, up high
Lots of these recessed nooks with statues scattered around the town.
Composition challenge
This was purely me killing time as my wife shopped. I was trying to get the tower, the lamp and the statue all in the same shot all in focus, and properly exposed. The sun direction killed me and I could not get the depth of field to get the tower in focus.
Old homes on Rue Ernest Renan, Treguier
Stone work detail, modern
This style of stone work, with the massive blocks surrounding a field of colorful smaller stones with raised mortar I believe is a somewhat more modern style. I liked its shape and color. You find these in between doors and windows, generally with three to five inset blocks.
My first perfect flower
Again, killing time while my wife and Sonia were shopping nearby, I nailed the focus, “wicked” crisp and sharp (wicked is a Boston expression, meaning “really exemplary”, superlative). This JPEG version does not do it justice but Squarespace is so limited in its image formats and color depth, I really need to migrate my photos to a better platform. I know, I know, SmugMug!
Little musical figures in shop window
Look close, those instruments are ordinary drywall screws. I wish the light was “wider”…..something in my edit I still am lacking.
Hanging jacket display, Treguier
I liked the forms and group of colors and played with dropping the background to just have the jackets stand out.
Slate rooftop with chicken finials
Delightful finials, I want some!!! Oh, and that slate is sooo chunky and sexy.
Textured door detail, Treguier
This is the door of the chicken finial house. Currently home to a fine jeweler.
My best Cathedral shot ever
I think except for the pesky cars, I nailed this one. And yes, lots of treatment in software but mainly, balancing the sky and foreground exposures. The sky was almost as is. I did lighten the church more than needed for the impact. I took this one sitting at a cafe with Sonia, Gino and Dominique
Sonia and Gino on Ile des Femmes
Sonia and Dominique, 1 of 2
I just could not pick between this one and the next one.
Sonia and Dominique, 2 of 2
This is a tighter, closer crop, Dominique’s mouth is open. I think she looks stunning. The more I look at the two shots, the more I think this is the better one and better edit.
Blatant pandering shot of Ile du Chateau
The light was bad, so instead of throwing away this shot, which has a classic view of the island, I decided to blatantly pander away and mask and boost. My wife hates this edit - the colors are too unnatural. Me, I look around the news papers and internet and this is the treatment given to many photos to pull in the eye. How about you, what is your take?
Mysterious holes in giant granite boulder
This boulder spends a fair part of the day submerged by the tide. What could have formed those holes? It is the only boulder I have seen in the area with those holes.
Boulders and tidal pool
I liked the water, clean and clear, glistening amongst the boulders.
Ile du Chateau
A more sober edit of a classic Port Blanc vista. The white tall object is a navigation guide, locally called a “pain de sucre” or sugarloaf. This one as a twin across the mouth of the harbor entrance. Sailors line up the Port Blanc guide on the land (see earlier photo) between these two to find the harbor mouth.
Gino, Sonia and Dominique giggling amongst the rocks
A good photo for friends, not really a photographic masterwork.
Dominique gazing towards the Pain De Sucre
A lovely light and a breeze, we walked out to Ile au Femmes at the low tide but were too late (and the tide not strong enough) to walk over to Ile du Chateau.
Dominique turning towards the camera
She obeyed and turned her head as I was shooting. Nice shot of my lovely wife.
Hello down there!
Sonia and Gino up on top of rocks, I am standing on the ground exposed by the tide. Again, a photo for friends.
Slabs with Port Blanc in the distance
I kind of like this one, the shape of the slabs with Port Blanc in the distance.
Dominique facing in to the wind
Another shot of Dominique, this time looking out to sea.
Berniques are actually snails!
We thought they were some weird species of barnacles all these years. Dominique finally looks them up on the interwebz and lol! they are a snail! Eaten only in times of starvation from what we have heard.
Galets, ciel et mer
Gino in the distance along the immense beachs of small rounded stones, galets in French. I like it the shot even if most people don’t. I think it really captures the place, Port Blanc, the immense tides, the later summer sky, and mounds of galets heaped into rows (sillons) and lining the rocky isles, pushed around by waves and the currents and thrown around in the storms.
Ile du Chateau from afar
The water is pretty much that color, I did some editing but again, my objective on this vacation was to shoot so my light level was based on my subject/foreground and then edit the sky back down.
Waiting on the shore
Another friends photos, Sonia and Gino waiting for the dawdling photographer and his lovely mate who has to examine all the rocks and tidal pools looking for interesting sea creatures.
Blow hole for a granite whale?
This hole in the granite, surrounded by a ring of salt left over from evaporation. Is this natural or was it drilled for some lost reason like a post for navigation or anchorage?
Failed mailbox "Fifote" number 2
I have been trying to photograph this mailbox and the magnificent cyprus tree on the property, unsuccessfully as usual, for a few years…..this one is took light and dark at the same time, I did not get a shot the recreates how my eye saw it.
