Plaza Mejor
Plaza Mayor - View from Corner
Plaza Mayor
The central square in Madrid (or any Spanish town I was told). Very touristy.
Mercado de San Miguel
Upscale food court in elgagnt beaux arts iron and glass
Church of St Gines, front
St Gines viewed from the Calle del Arenal
Decorative cornice detail
Madrid did not dissapoint with architectural details. 4 calle de san martin
Door detail monastery
Ancient doors with the raised nailers, dotted the city. This one was at Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales.
A different door
I thought is was cheeky. The Bell, Humans and Cars.
Door detail, cathedral
Immense bronze doors at the Catedral de la Almudena. I think this one shows God, his Host, Mary, the King, and then the people.
More doors from Cathedrale
Some more doors at the Catedral de la Almudena. I think this shows the glory of the Spanish empire in conquest, bringing Christianity to the savages. Kind of creepy but that was European sentiment in the 18/19/20th century.
Iron eagle on corner
A memorial to "Ana de Mendoza" who was arrested on that spot in 1579 by order of the King Philip II.
Fishy rainspout
I really want one.
View of Catedral de la Almudena
Seen from Calle de Sacremento.
Decorative transom
On the Calle de Sacremento, unknown date, guessing 16th or 17 century, dragons or griffons, cherubs, and maybe monkeys fighting?
Blooming tree
Iglesia de San Andrés Apóstol
Flamenco in red, poised
Ready? Aim! Poop!
Birds got no respect for statues of humans.
White Iris, Madrid Botanical Garden
I like the shot even if it is a boring flower closeup shop.
Greenery at the Botanical Garden
Not a great or even a good shot, mainly to have as a souvenir of how the place looked.
Chestnut (Marrons d'Inde) flowering
Less successul than I hoped.
Bonsai trunk detail
Spiky bonsai
Not sure what this is, not a great photo but its documentary.
Casa Gonzalez interior
The Casa Gonzalez was a fantastic old place, we didnt get to go back for a hot meal but the charcuterie lunch we had was outstanding.
Old coffee mill
This is a experimental shot, tried to antique an otherwise mediocre shot.
Claret and Gazpacho reflections
Casa Gonzalez, detail of the corner where we sat....
Hiperreal at the Thyssen
Hiperreal at the Thyssen
Really made the focus is off.
Hiperreal at the Thyssen
The goblet falling out of the false frame...
Hiperreal at the Thyssen
Astounding color is not done justice by even modern cameras....the blue sapphire was riveting.
Hiperreal at the Thyssen
The paper was extremely convincing. Kenneth Davies, 20th century, born New Bedford.
Hiperreal at the Thyssen
Red ribbons I guess are a thing in painterly circles, there exhibit had centuries of studies featuing objects pinned to ribbons. This one by Van Hodgstraten in the 17th century showed amazing techinque in the weaving of the ribbon through the tines and other objects and the folds and twists of the ribbon itself.
Hiperreal at the Thyssen "La Giconda impudica"
Very cheeky.....Pierre Gilou 20th century.
Hiperreal at the Thyssen "The Vestal Virgins"
A grisaille, a form I like and learned about in Bruges, this was astonishingly 3 dimensional, as you rounded the corder, you believed it was a scupture in an alcove, not a flat canvas! Jacob De Witt 18th century
Hiperreal at the Thyssen
One of two hyper hyper modern "Estes" photorealistic. Too bad I cant focus or remember to focus.
Hiperreal at the Thyssen "ATM"
Another "estes", this was too real.
Hiperreal at the Thyssen "Ducordeau Window"
Beautiful layering, simple but convincing and graceful, the shadows and the light, the fold of the fabric....wow.
Mercado de San Fernando - Books by the kilo
Puerta de Toledo - detail
Detail of the top showing various figures - Athena?, ram, ewe....
Viaducto de Segovia
Royal Palace of Madrid
We didn't go in.
Fuente del Nacimiento del Agua
Fountain in front of the Carmelite church on Plaza De Espana.
Museo Sorolla - Girls entering
This is a 19th century home, in a posh neighborhood now ruined because the older housing stock with the walled garden is replaced by apartmentn towers....this is a vestige. My little Dorchester home trembles at what could be....
Museo Sorolla - Ceramics wall
No explanation, this museum is highly personnel, the artist left it and we see it.
Museo Sorolla - Dish with crane
Like the USA, it seems the late 19th century taste makers were heavily influenced by the exposure to Japanese and Chinese art forms.
Museo Sorolla - Pitchers
I didnt promise pictures you all would like. Welcome to MySpace...oops.
Museo Sorolla - Bluesy
Sorry, tight focus is still a thing for me, maybe I will grow up.
Museo Sorolla - Tiles
I was going to throw this away but then I looked at the tile....man, the Spanish tile....
Museo Sorolla - The Investigation
An actual painting by the artist in a room of his house. I liked this for the light on the bottles and the layering of the men around the seater scientist.
Museo Sorolla - Swimmer
I forget to get a copy of the information tag...oh. There wasn't one. This painting was an intriguing subject.....little explanation provided. Lifelike like that.
Museo Sorolla - Three Plates
I like them. Pattern matters.
Museo Sorolla - Birds in blue
Yeah so waht? F4.0. And zoomed....Wotcha gonna do, eh? Ok, cheap.
Museo Sorolla- Cottony soft
My buns never felt better! Well, they never even touched this seat...instant excommunication...
Museo Sorolla - Beach at golden hour
I really liked this, the photo sucks compared to the subtlety of the oil paint and it was like 15 feet up in the air.....still...
Museo Sorolla - Mirror Detail
Because she is my girl......
Museo Sorolla - Fishermen at low tide
My title, this painting was 15 feet up in the air, the babe beneath the window, the boats at low tide through the shutters.....I like this one a lot.
Museo Sorolla - Girl screaming
What a sculpture! What a crappy picture! But that sculpture, of the artists daughter, in pure emotion. Sorry.
A gargoyle work is never done.
They don't get a day off.....
